KwaZulu-Natal faces contrasting winter weather this week. Possible light snowfall is expected near the Drakensberg Mountains while the coastline warms to summer-like temperatures.
Forecasters say a weak cold front brushing the country’s southern parts on Monday evening may result in light snow around Lesotho, with spillover possible into high-lying areas near the Drakensberg.
“Just to remind us that winter is not yet over, but things are starting to warm up across the eastern areas,” said Joel Guy, a forecaster.
“This morning is not too cold for much of the interior of South Africa.”
Snowfall in other parts, coastal areas, reach the mid-20s
In stark contrast, much of the KwaZulu-Natal coast enjoys mild to warm winter conditions. Durban, Richards Bay, and Hluhluwe are expected to reach daytime highs of around 26°C, with partly cloudy skies and strong easterly winds.
The warmer trend is a welcome relief for many residents along the coast, although inland regions remain notably cooler. Port St. Johns and Margate started the day in the low teens, while inland Kokstad remained cold and overcast.
Rain and Wind Pick Up in Southern KZN
Weather conditions are expected to become wetter as the day progresses, particularly in southern KwaZulu-Natal. Kokstad and the surrounding areas face a chance of afternoon showers as the cold front interacts with moist air inland.
KwaZulu-Natal residents are reminded to keep jackets close and umbrellas handy, particularly those near the Drakensberg and in southern towns.
Will KZN’s inland cold and coastal warmth continue to clash as the season shifts?
