South Africa not invited to take part in the G20 summit in 2026

United States (US) President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that South Africa will not be invited to take part in the G20 summit in Miami in 2026.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Rights abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.

“They are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them. Perhaps, worst of all, the soon-to-be out-of-business New York Times and the Fake News Media won’t issue a word against this genocide,” he wrote.

He also claims that the country mistreated an American representative at this year’s G20 summit at Nasrec.

“South Africa refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a Senior Representative from our U.S. Embassy, who attended the Closing Ceremony. Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.

Trump said his administration will stop all payments and subsidies to South Africa.

“South Africa has demonstrated to the world they are not a country worthy of membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to Trump, saying that the country will not be insulted.

“South Africa is a member of the G20 in its own name and right. It’s G20 membership is at the behest of all other members.

“South Africa is a sovereign, constitutional, democratic country and does not appreciate insults from another country about its worth in participating in global platforms. South Africa will never insult another country or its standing in the community of nations,” he said in a statement.

G20 PRESIDENCY HANDOVER CEREMONY

He said South Africa will continue to participate as a full, active and constructive member of the G20.

“We call on members of the G20 to reaffirm its continued operation in the spirit of multilateralism, based on consensus, with all members participating on an equal footing in all of its structures.” Ramaphosa said.

South Africa refused to hand over the G20 presidency to the US embassy official to the United States embassy representative, Marc Dillard, during the handover ceremony last week, citing that it was against protocol.

South Africa believes the US was downgrading its participation by assigning a representative from its embassy to lead its delegation.

The country handed over the G20 Presidency to a junior US diplomat, David Greene, on Tuesday in Pretoria.

TENSIONS BETWEEN SA AND THE UNITED STATES

The White House boycotted the summit after making claims that white Afrikaners were being violently targeted.

Trump wrote a post on social media earlier this month that no U.S. Government Official will attend the summit.

“It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa. Afrikaners (People who are descended from Dutch settlers, and also French and German immigrants) are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated.

No U.S. Government Official will attend as long as these Human Rights abuses continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida!” he wrote.

He signed an executive order earlier this year to cut financial assistance for South Africa due to the widely discredited claim that there was a genocide of white farmers in South Africa. He also cited disapproval of the country’s land policy despite the country repeatedly denying these claims.
