South Africa welcomes Hamas decision to release Israeli hostages

South Africa has officially welcomed the move by Hamas to release all Israeli hostages, calling it a pivotal moment in efforts to end the conflict in Gaza.

The government says the decision signals a possible reset in negotiations and urges all parties to match the gesture.

SOUTH AFRICA WELCOMES HAMAS’ DECISION

In a public statement, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation urged Israel to respond reciprocally.

The department called for the release of Palestinian political prisoners, including detained children and those seized from the humanitarian flotilla.

Currently, the Israeli government deported the flotilla group to Turkey on 4 October 2025. So far, no South African citizens have been deported.

HAMAS RELEASE ISRAEL HOSTAGES AND SUPPORTS PEACE TALKS

Hamas agreed on 3 October 2025 to release the hostages and accept parts of the United States peace proposal.

US President Donald Trump recently issued a 20-point plan aimed at halting the conflict.

He gave Hamas until 5 October 2025 to accept the terms or face consequences and has since pressed Israel to honour the agreement as well.

A POSSIBLE SHIFT TOWARDS LASTING PEACE

South Africa views the decision to release Israeli hostages as a chance to secure long-term peace and reinforce human dignity.

The department maintains that no peace process can succeed while fundamental rights are denied.

Officials argue that both sides must confront the root causes of the conflict and work towards an immediate, permanent ceasefire.

SOUTH AFRICA REITERATES SUPPORT FOR PALESTINIAN STATEHOOD

The government has repeated its call to recognise Palestine as an independent state.

Ministerial spokesperson Chrispan Phiri said South Africa remains committed to human rights, peace efforts, and the realisation of Palestinian self-determination.
