Spanish airport with Ryanair flights is getting a £1.3bn upgrade including fewer queues and 12million more passengers

ANOTHER Spain airport is set for a major revamp.

Estimated to cost €1.5billion (£1.3billion), Malaga Airport will undergo a multi-year expansion project which includes making the terminals larger and security more efficient, meaning less lengthy queues.

The total terminal space at the airport will nearly double in size from 80,000sqm to 140,000sqm.

As a result, the airport will have more boarding gates, larger check-in areas and security areas and more shops and places for travellers to eat.

The project also includes knocking down Terminal 1 to build a new non-Schengen area with border control.

Once the project is complete, the airport expects to handle up to 36million passengers a year, which would be 12million more than the airport handled in 2024.

Construction is set to begin in 2027 and the airport aims to complete the project by 2031.

Aena, the operator of 46 Spanish airports, hopes to also introduce next-generation screening technology.

These scanners would eliminate the need for travellers to take liquids or electronic devices such as laptops out of their hand luggage.

Other improvements include new aircraft taxiways and additional parking for travellers using the airport.

The operator has also confirmed that the airport will remain open throughout the project.

According to Sur in English, four companies have submitted proposals to design the expansion, including Bruce Fairbanks who designed the T3 terminal at Malaga Airport back in 2010.

Multiple airlines fly to Malaga Airport, including Ryanair with one-way flights from as little as £14.99.

Aena also operates Barcelona Airport, which is also set for a huge upgrade, due to gain approval in 2028.

If the plans are approved, Aena will invest £2.8billion into expanding Barcelona Airport, with the operator hoping to reach a runway capacity of 90 flights per hour – up from 70 per hour at the moment.

Both projects form part of the DORA III plan, which entails a €13bn (£11.3bn) investment from Aena into its 46 airports over the next five years.

The next part of the plan, dubbed DORA IV, will cover 2032 to 2036.

Aena said: “This long-term vision is not only a technical necessity, but also a strategic national decision – one designed for the decades ahead, allowing Catalonia to realise its full potential in an increasingly interconnected world.”

A number of other airports will receive upgrades under the plans too, such as Reus Airport, which will gain a new passport control area for arrivals.

At Girona Airport, upgrades will result in improvements to the boarding area, as well as a new outdoor terrace.

Aena estimates that its airports will handle up to 320million people in 2025, which would be a 3.4 per cent increase from last year’s record-breaking 309million passengers.

£25billion plans for Heathrow Airport, that want to take on ‘world’s best airport’ with sixth new terminal, have also recently been revealed.

Plus, one regional UK airport is getting a huge £50million revamp – including a new central terminal.
