The Springboks beat Argentina 67–30 in Durban on Saturday to move into top spot in the Rugby Championship standings.
A fortnight after steamrolling New Zealand in Wellington, the Springboks have done it again. Only this time, it was on home soil with Argentina the team on the receiving end – and the South Africans had to overcome a tougher challenge from the Pumas today than they did against the All Blacks.
The Springboks outscored the visitors nine tries to three for a victory that takes them to 15 log points, level with the All Blacks, but atop the standings thanks to a superior points differential.
Additionally, the result makes the Springboks the first team to claim back-to-back wins in this year’s Rugby Championship.
So, who shone brightest in this enthralling – if madcap – encounter, you might wonder? Well, here are some key player ratings based on today’s individual performances:
SPRINGBOK PLAYER RATINGS
All scores out of 10
SACHA FEINBERG-MNGOMEZULU – 9
With 37 points, accumulated from three tries, eight conversions, and two penalties, Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the star of the show for the Springboks. Among a field of world-class talent, he was head and shoulders above the rest.
The skill, execution, and confidence on display from this young playmaker were a sight to behold today. And with his 37-point haul, he smashed the legendary Percy Montgomery’s record (35) for the most points by an individual for the Springboks in a single Test match.
PIETER-STEPH DU TOIT – 8.5
Pieter‑Steph du Toit rising to the challenge and delivering at the highest level when occasion demands it? Move along, there’s nothing new to see here.
The big man capped off yet another fine performance in the green and gold with two tries, taking his overall career tally to 14 for the Springboks. He was arguably the best forward on the park.
ETHAN HOOKER – 8
As he did in his first Test start against the All Blacks, Hooker again made a huge impact on and off the ball. His stocks are rising with every game he plays for the Springboks. He didn’t score today, but he racked up a couple of try assists and was defensively sound on the wing once again.
