Springbok Women jump in World Rugby rankings after epic victory

The Springbok Women’s side have moved into the Top 10 in the latest World Rugby rankings after their 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup win over Italy on Sunday.

Coach Swys de Bruin’s side recorded a 29-24 win in York, their first ever victory over their Italian opponents.

The Springbok Women’s side entered the match ranked 12th in the world – as opposed to Italy’s eighth place.

However, after the final whistle, the Springbok Women moved to 10th place, while Italy slipped to ninth.

Guaranteed a quarter-final spot

The Springbok Women’s side will wrap up their Pool D commitments against fourth-ranked France on Sunday, 7 September at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton.

Win or lose, the Springbok Women are guaranteed a spot in the Last 8.

The Springbok Women’s side beat Brazil 66-6 in their opening Pool D match.

‘Immensely proud’

Meanwhile, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus congratulated the Springbok Women’s side for making history by qualifying for the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

“I woke up at 02:30 (in New Zealand) to watch the match, and I’d like to congratulate Swys (de Bruin) and his team for what they achieved, and also SA Rugby for everything they are doing for women’s rugby.

“We are immensely proud of them, and we wish them luck as they continue their campaign,” Erasmus said.
