The Springboks head towards back-to-back Tests against the All Blacks on a historic four-match winning streak against their arch-rivals, and there is great anticipation building as a ‘rematch’ looms on the horizon.
New Zealand have not last lost a Test match at their iconic Eden Park ground since 1994 when the game was only just turning professional, and the Springboks are fully aware of just what a challenge lies in store.
“I think it’s probably the biggest game since the Rugby World Cup Final, so the players are excited,” said assistant coah Tony Brown. “The feeling in the camp is mainly excitement,” he said. “The Eden Park record is on the line, and it’s an amazing opportunity for us to go out there and take on the challenge.”
Brown set to add great value to Springboks
The Springboks will be facing the All Blacks in New Zealand for the first time since onboarding Brown – who was a famed Kiwi star during his playing days – and there is no doubt that he will provide real insight into what should be expected.
“Being a Kiwi in the Springbok environment … asking me questions around the haka, about the All Blacks, about rugby in New Zealand. I’ve got some massive insights into how the All Blacks operate,” he said.
“For me, being part of the Springboks is a massive honour. Coaching against my home country is super exciting. I want to be part of the biggest games on the biggest stages.
“Ultimately, they (the Springboks) need to control the game, manage field position and take space when it’s on… You can’t attack with backs alone. Backs need the forwards to create momentum and get over the gain line … the better we attack together, the better the opportunities we create.”
