Table Mountain and its cableway earn nods at World Travel Awards

Table Mountain and its Aerial Cableway are in the running to take home the top honours from the 32nd annual World Travel Awards.

This time last year, Cape Town was named “Africa’s Leading City Destination” at the prestigious travel awards ceremony.

So, it’s no wonder that one of the Mother City’s most famous landmarks, as well as its cableway, has bagged nominations at this year’s event.

TABLE MOUNTAIN: WORLD’S LEADING TOURIST ATTRACTION

The iconic Table Mountain has been nominated in the category of “World’s Leading Tourist Attraction”.

This landmark has been shortlisted for the category several times over the years. While it has yet to be granted the title, it has been named “Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction” five times, most recently in 2022.

Now, Table Mountain will be going up against 18 other world-class tourist attractions, including:

  • Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
  • Grand Canyon National Park, United States of America.
  • Machu Picchu, Peru.
  • Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
  • Niagara Falls, Canada.
  • Taj Mahal, India.
  • The Acropolis of Athens, Greece.

Meanwhile, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is competing for the title of “World’s Leading Cable Car Ride”.

TMACC was previously nominated for the award on four separate occasions, losing out to Armenia’s Wings of Tatev in 2024.

Now, Cape Town’s lauded cableway has the chance to snatch the crown this year. It will compete against seven other hopefuls:

  • Cable Car at Sun World Ba Na Hills, Vietnam.
  • Disney Skyliner Cable Car, United States of America.
  • Mi Teleférico, Bolivia.
  • Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar, Brazil.
  • PEAK 2 PEAK 360, Canada.
  • Skyline Queenstown, New Zealand.
  • Wings of Tatev, Armenia.

WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS NOMINATIONS ‘AN INCREDIBLE HONOUR’

Wahida Parker, the managing director of TMACC, expressed her happiness and gratitude about these nominations.

“Being recognised again at the World Travel Awards is an incredible honour,” said Parker. “This competition is our industry’s version of the Oscars and reflects a commitment to excellence.

“These nominations reaffirm our dedication to safety, sustainability and world-class service – while protecting the mountain’s unique biodiversity.”

TABLE MOUNTAIN, CABLEWAY NEEDS YOUR VOTES!

Both landmarks are the sole South African representatives at the World Travel Awards. As such, locals are strongly encouraged to vote in their favour.

“We have never won in the world categories before, and it would be incredibly special if we could make it happen this time around,” said Parker.

To help Table Mountain and TMACC bring home the titles, you can cast your vote on www.worldtravelawards.com. Don’t delay, as voting closes this Sunday, 26 October 2025.
