Gift Leotlela and Akani Simbine finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the final of the men’s 100m on the second day of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday.

Bossed the race
Elsewhere, the world’s fastest man over one lap, South Africa’s Zakithi Nene, won his heat in a comfortable 44.74, where he bossed the race to set himself up for Tuesday’s semi-finals, along with Lythe Pillay.
In men’s 1 500m heats action, favourite Jacob Ingebrigtsen was a surprise casualty, failing to reach the semi-finals, while South Africa’s Ryan Mphalele was also unable to get out of the heats.
In the men’s 10 000m final, Adrian Wildschutt was 10th, with gold going to France’s Jimmy Greisser in a major upset.
