The three habits that cause frustrating ‘hair dents’ and how to avoid them

THERE is nothing more frustrating than going to style your hair only to notice a huge ‘dent’ ruining your look.

These mess up the hair’s natural flow and can make it look bent or folded at a particualr point.

While these dents are normally only temporary, they can disrupt your style and stop your hair from looking smooth and sleek.

And they can be hard to remove once they’ve set, requiring a lot of effort and techniques like wetting and reshaping the hair to try and undo the kink.

The annoying marks have recently infuriated beauty fans, with more and more sharing their frustrations on social media.

Several TikToks have gone viral in recent weeks as many users look for ways to get rid of their hair dents.

Luckily, hair experts are on hand to help.

Pros at Shark Beauty have revealed the main causes of hair dents as well as their expert advice for avoiding this common hair issue.

The beauty pros have said there are three habits that are commonly responsible for hair dents, with the main one being tight hairstyles.

They said: “Wearing your hair in tight hairstyles, such as ponytails and buns, is often the main culprit for hair dents.

“These styles create consistent tension on the hair shaft, which can lead to the hair creasing, resulting in visible dents to the hair, especially when worn for long periods.”

Similar to this, another thing that can make them appear is hair accessories.

The experts explain: “Certain hair accessories could be responsible for the dents in your hair. Tight elastic hair bobbles, hair clips and bobby pins can apply pressure to the hair.

“This pressure can cause the hair to crease, particularly if the accessories are used regularly or applied tightly.”

It’s not just what you wear in your hair that can cause problems; how you sleep can also cause hair dents.

The experts say: “Your sleeping habits can have a significant impact on the formation of hair dents.

“Resting your head in the same position every night creates consistent pressure points on certain areas of the hair.

“This repeated pressure, combined with friction from pillowcases and bedding, can cause the hair shaft to crease and form dents in the hair.”

While they can be hard to get rid of once they appear, there are three things you can do to prevent hair dents from forming.

These include opting for looser hairstyles, taking regular breaks from styling, and switching to silk pillowcases.

Five haircare myths that are actually damaging your locks

There are endless hacks to level up your haircare routine, but experts have warned that many of these hacks are myths, and can even be harmful to your hair.

Eva Proudman, who has over 20 years of experience in scalp and hair health, has revealed which haircare hacks you need to watch out for.

Hair training – “This myth suggests that going cold turkey on washing your hair can help to regulate the production of natural oils which make it greasy. However, this is a myth and can cause damage and irritation to your scalp.”

Lemon highlights – “The citrus in the lemon juice is acidic and, perhaps unsurprisingly, this isn’t good for your hair. Combined with overexposure to the sun, your hair will become damaged at a much quicker rate”.

Cut and grow – “Your hair grows from the roots, so while taking off those split ends will help to make it healthier overall, it won’t have any impact in terms of increasing growth.”

H-air dryer –  Letting your hair dry naturally can actually do it more damage.

Grey day – One myth out there is that pulling your grey hairs out can help to stop them from spreading, but not only is it painful to pluck them out, but it could cause damage to your scalp and infection.

The experts say: “One of the best ways to prevent dents and creases from forming in your hair is to opt for looser hairstyles.

“Looser ponytails and buns not only minimise the amount of tension on your hairline and scalp but also minimise creasing and dents on the hair shaft.

“Wearing your hair in the same style every day can cause repeated pressure to the hair shaft, especially if styled tightly or with heat.

“Giving your hair regular breaks from styling not only allows your hair to return to its natural shape, but also can minimise hair damage caused by constant tension and heat exposure.

“If your hair is prone to denting whilst you sleep, switching to a silk pillowcase is one of the best solutions.

“Unlike cotton, silk reduces friction on your hair whilst sleeping, which not only protects the surface of your hair, but can also maintain a smoother, crease-free finish.”
