True to form, it was a clean sweep for the Western Cape for the best-run municipalities in SA, reports IOL. So, which were the best within the province and who talked away with top honours?
BEST-RUN MUNICIPALITIES IN SA
Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that the best-run municipalities in SA are recognised for things like clean financial audits and the efficacy of capital spending. As such, here’s how the best of the best ranked:
- West Coast District municipality – 14 consecutive clean audits and excellent capital project spending.
- Breede Valley municipality – 10 consecutive years of spotless audits and fully funded budgets.
- Cape Winelands District municipality – 11 consecutive clean audits and strong budget management.
- The City of Cape Town was ranked as the best metro.
MUNICIPAL PERFORMANCE AWARDS
Likewise, there was much to celebrate in the Municipal Performance Awards, a category that recognises excellence in local governance and service delivery. SA Property Owners Association, Ratings Afrika and the Banking Association of SA awarded these top performers:
- 1. Swartland and Saldanha Bay (tied first).
- 2. Swellendam.
- 3. Hessequa.
The MEC for Local Government and Environmental Affairs, Anton Bredell, had this to say about the best-run municipalities in SA: “We’d like to congratulate the winning municipalities. Financial management is the foundation from which all other aspects of local government are built. Therefore, a clean audit does not mean there is no poverty, inequality, crime or unemployment. But it means the municipality used the money entrusted to it for the intended purposes,” concluded Bredell.
