Three things to do around the Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles is a famous coastal mountain range. It is one of Cape Town’s idyllic and majestic attractions, and a signature part of the scenic beauty that makes up this region.

The mountain range is known for its characteristic peaks. It overlooks Camps Bay and extends to Hout Bay.

Apart from simply admiring the Twelve Apostles, there are various other ways to enjoy the region and make the most of this mountain range as a focal point. Below are three top ways.

The Twelve Apostles’ history

The Twelve Apostles’ name reportedly originates from Sir Rufane Donkin, a British Governor, who named the peaked mountain range in 1820 due to its buttressed appearance consisting of 12 peaks. However, it has also been identified to have more than 12 peaks; reportedly, some sources state there are 17, and others 18.

Before the Twelve Apostles became the designated name, the mountain range was also known as Kasteelbergen, meaning Castle Mountains, and Geuvelbergen, meaning Gable Mountains, by the Dutch settlers.

Interestingly, the 12 peaks are also named. In order from North to South, the names are as follows: Kloof, Fountain, Porcupine, Jubilee, Barrier, Valken, Kasteel, Postern, Wood, Spring, Slangolie, Corridor, Separation, Victoria, Grove, Llandudno Peak, Llandudno Corridor, and Hout Bay Corner.

Hiking

While there are numerous trails available to immerse yourself in the mountainous scenery around the Twelve Apostles, the Kasteelpoort Trail is highly recommended. It boasts brilliant views of the Atlantic Coast and its surroundings and has been described as an easy route, although it does become steep, so be prepared before planning your trail route.

Scenic Drive

Victoria Road, the M6, which starts from Seapoint and continues through to Hout Bay, offers a stunning scenic route with views of the Twelve Apostles.  Taking a day drive along this road will offer so many opportunities to take amazing photos, have a relaxing cup of coffee along the way, and simply make new memories with the best backdrops!

Camp’s Bay Beach

Enjoy a day on Camp’s Bay Beach, not only soaking up the sun, but also the majestic views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range.  Camp’s Bay Beach also has a Blue Flag status, which is an international certification in compliance with safety, environmental, and cleanliness standards.

Although this is a brief list, it provides a starting point for activities along the way. Whether you enjoy the outdoors or prefer to have a coffee or cocktail at one of the many cafes and bars surrounding the region, you can be sure that the Twelve Apostles will be there with you for the ride.
