KwaZulu-Natal started the day under cloudy skies, with patches of morning fog reducing visibility across parts of the province.
As the fog clears, much of the province will see cloudy to partly cloudy conditions before thunderstorms develop later in the day.
The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected across the western interior of KwaZulu-Natal and extending into the eastern Free State and Eastern Cape. These storms risk heavy rain, localised flooding, strong winds, and hail.
Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela warned, “Heavy downpours could cause flooding in some areas, while damaging winds and hail remain a possibility.” Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to stay alert and avoid crossing flooded roads.
Warm Conditions Amid Risks
Despite the storm warnings, KwaZulu-Natal will also experience warm daytime conditions. Temperatures in northern and central areas will reach 28°C, while coastal towns will stay cooler at around 24°C.
“The province will remain warm over the central and northern parts, with cooler conditions along the coast,” Thobela explained.
The mix of warmth and storm risk shows that residents must prepare for changing weather patterns, especially as late afternoon showers and thunderstorms become more likely.
Are communities in KwaZulu-Natal doing enough to prepare for localised flooding during storm warnings?
