TikTok invests in SA’s digital future with creator day

TikTok hosted its annual **#LevelUpAfrica Creator Education Day in Johannesburg, bringing together creators, media, industry leaders and government officials.

The event highlighted TikTok’s commitment to South Africa’s growing digital economy and its role in empowering young people through creative opportunities.

TIKTOK AND LEVEL UP AFRICA

The education session formed part of TikTok’s wider **#LevelUpAfrica programme, which aims to support 3,000 creators across Sub-Saharan Africa by the end of 2025.

Creators had the chance to network, learn directly from the TikTok team, and hear from industry experts, according to Biz Community.

Topics included content monetisation, account health, storytelling, and strategies for growth. The goal was clear: give creators the tools to expand their careers and unlock impact opportunities.

THE CREATOR COMMUNITY IN AFRICA

“This event allows us to connect with our vibrant creator community across Africa,” said Boniswa Sidwaba, TikTok’s Head of Content Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa.

“It’s not just about skills. It’s about building community, sparking collaboration and creating career opportunities.”

TIKTOK CREATORS TAKE PART

Several leading South African creators attended the gathering. The DreamBoys and Keegan Gordon, known for their large-scale challenges with a social impact, shared insights from their journeys, according to Lifestyle and Tech.

“TikTok has allowed me to bring ideas to life in a positive way,” said Gordon. “Anyone can change their life, or even the lives of others, by telling a story with just one device.”

Popular personalities like Nathan Molefe, the self-styled ‘King of Skits’ and Yolenda Jawe, known as Yolzchannel for her lifestyle and property advice, also took part.

SOUTH AFRICAN TALENT

Respected film and TV practitioner Ayanda Halimana encouraged creators to stay focused. “Take your content seriously. Know your ‘why’. Understand the bigger story you need to tell.”

TikTok combined its global reach with support from partners such as the National Film and Video Foundation. The event showcased how creativity can open doors for South Africans. It also highlighted the opportunities available in the digital economy.
