A Johannesburg TikToker has given he public a glimpse of her experience trialling the Checkers smart trolley at her local store.
Last week, the retailer shared a look at its invention, the Xpress Trolley, which allows customers to scan as they shop and check out directly from their cart.
The shop and bag devices are currently available at the Constantia and Brackenfell branches.
TIKTOKER TRIALS CHECKERS SMART TROLLEY
This week, TikToker @veronica_be_the1 posted a clip of herself trialling the Checkers smart trolley in Brackenfell.
In a video with close to one million views, the woman gave a step-by-step account of the process, which began with scanning your Xtra Savings card.
Each item would be scanned via its barcode and entered into a “cart,” with an electronic checkout.
“Just scan and go…that’s really cool”, she said.

CONCERNS FOR JOB LOSS, THEFT
In the comment section, fellow South Africans shared their concerns that the Checkers smart trolley would aid shoplifting, as consumers would purposely not scan their items in their baskets.
The TikToker responded: “You can’t, it knows everything that goes in and out of that trolley. And the people in the checkout look at everything.
“The trolley knows when you put an item in it and also when you take it out. And it will ask if you removed an item. Very clever!”
However, others were worried that the Checkers smart trolley could see significant job losses, particularly for cashiers.
One TikToker shared: “I do not support technology that creates job losses. 😒”.
Another added, “The Unemployment rate is already high. I understand we all want convenience, but think of our brothers and sisters who need their jobs.”
