‘Trust no one’: Speculation as Mkhwanazi brings his own water to commission

Video clips of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi refusing to drink water offered to him on day one of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, and carrying his own instead, have led to speculation from social media users.

The provincial top cop testified on day one of the commission, set to investigate allegations of political interference in South Africa’s criminal justice system.

SPECULATION: NHLANHLA MKHWANAZI REFUSES TO DRINK WATER AT COMMISSION?

On the X app, video clips of Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi seemingly snubbing bottles of water offered to him at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry quickly went viral.

The commission took place at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria.

The top cop entered the room with his own bottled water, which he placed on his desk in front of him. He did not drink the water given to him by hospitality staff.

The subtle action was not lost on X users, who quickly speculated about Mkhwanazi’s decision.

Here’s what a few had to say…

@JackiePhamotse: “General Mkhwanazi brought his own bottle of water! You can never be too safe. Trust no one! The state is the enemy!”

@zola_hashatsi: “Very clever, he beat them with reverse psychology, trust no one. Should be a lesson to us all.”

@Knick_RSA: “They’re trying to corner Mkhwanazi with cheap tricks, and he’s not having it. We remember what happened to Tambo, poisoned right before negotiations that he planned to liberate the country.”

@Thabis0_012: “Dear General Mkhwanazi. No one is your friend. Treat all of them as suspects and criminals. Don’t eat anything from there. Bring your own food. Bring your own water.”

SNUBBING A HANDSHAKE TOO?

In addition to allegedly refusing to drink bottled water given to him, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi also seemingly snubbed the handshake of an official at the Madlanga Commission.

Instead, he begrudgingly gave a fist pump.

MKHWANAZI DEATH THREATS

After his bombshell media briefing in July, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had been receiving threats against his life.

As a result, police had put up protective measures, “beefing up security” at Mkhwanazi’s family home
