Two police officers among 27 arrested for drunken driving in KZN

Two police officers are among 27 people who were arrested for drunken driving in KwaZulu-Natal this weekend.

The arrest comes just a day after a senior prosecutor was also arrested for the same offence.

POLICE OFFICERS NABBED FOR DRUNKEN DRIVING

KZN Department of Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said a male police officer from Port Edward SAPS was arrested with an alcohol content of 1.05 mg/L – which is six times over the legal limit

Similarly, a female police officer from Southport Police Station in Port Shepstone was also arrested with an alcohol content of 0.85 mg/L – which is four times over the legal limit.

Sibiya said in Ladysmith, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) intercepted and arrested a drunk taxi driver with 24 passengers in his vehicle.

“This means that he overloaded his minibus taxi with eight people. His alcohol content was 1.08 mg/L – five times over the legal limit,” he said.

CONCERN OVER ARRESTS OF PUBLIC SERVANTS

The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN, Siboniso Duma said he has mandated the department to ensure that a comprehensive presentation is made before the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster.

Duma said this cluster has a responsibility to ensure that relevant departments work together to strengthen law enforcement, fight crime, and to guarantee national security for all citizens.

“Therefore, the arrest of police officers and a senior public prosecutor for drunk driving is a serious transgression that should receive our serious attention,” he said.
