UDM defends Holomisa after heated Gagasi FM exchange

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has defended its leader, Bantu Holomisa, following criticism of his behaviour during a radio interview.

Holomisa argued with callers on Alex Mthiyane’s current affairs show on Gagasi FM, eventually telling a listener and the presenter to “go to hell.”

UDM spokesperson Yongama Zigebe told The Citizen on Friday that people wrongly interpreted Holomisa’s “firm rebuttals and dark humour” as arrogance.

“Confidence and conviction in answering questions cannot simply be equated to evasion or disregard,” Zigebe said.

How the Argument Began

The confrontation started when a caller criticised Holomisa for allegedly disrespecting a previous caller’s language, calling it discriminatory and describing Holomisa as arrogant.

Holomisa repeatedly told the caller he was talking “nonsense” and reminded him that he had not voted for him.

When host Mthiyane asked Holomisa to retract his comments, Holomisa refused.

“If you are not satisfied, you can also go to hell. He is insulting me, and you are not protecting me,” he said.

The presenter reminded him that he must act responsibly as a minister representing all South Africans.

Party Defends Holomisa’s Conduct

Zigebe denied that Holomisa disrespected languages and said the caller provoked him.

“The expression he used referred to the manner or terms in which a person frames an argument, not anyone’s home language,” he said.

He added that presenters on live talk radio must treat guests fairly while giving the public a voice.

Should callers on live radio expect politicians to respond calmly when provoked?
