UN aid convoy destroyed in drone strike deepens Darfur famine

A drone attack destroyed three United Nations (UN) food convoy trucks in North Darfur on 20 August 2025.

The attack occurred while the 16-truck convoy was being offloaded, and the destroyed trucks caught fire after the strike.

All drivers and staff survived, according to UN spokesperson Daniela Gross. This was the second convoy attack in three months, following a deadly ambush in June.

The strike worsened hunger conditions, as aid was critical for famine-hit populations.

HUMANITARIAN COORDINATOR CONFIRMS DAMAGE

UN official Luca Renda confirmed trucks were unloading at Al Melit when drones struck. At least three trucks were burnt completely, destroying vital food stocks.

The World Food Programme (WFP) warned that the attack deepens famine in Darfur.

Warring parties quickly traded blame: the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accused Sudan’s army, which denied responsibility. The strike highlights growing risks for aid operations.

DARFUR HUNGER CRISIS ESCALATES

Darfur remains under siege, particularly around El Fasher, where Rapid Support Forces restrict movement.

Famine was already declared in the Zamzam camp and now threatens 17 Sudanese regions. Repeated attacks prevent humanitarian deliveries, trapping civilians in worsening hunger

Aid agencies warn of a collapse in food security. Relief workers urge stronger protections to ensure critical supplies reach families.

GLOBAL CALL FOR AID CORRIDORS

The United States, Saudi Arabia and Egypt called for humanitarian pauses after the strike. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) warned that without security guarantees, aid cannot reach millions in need.

Governments urged warring sides to permit safe aid corridors immediately. International pressure is growing as famine deepens in Sudan.

Appeals continue for urgent action to prevent catastrophic starvation.
