UPDATE | Huguenot Tunnel CLOSED after bus fire causes damage

The Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 highway remains closed to traffic on Saturday following a dramatic bus fire that broke out inside the tunnel late on Friday night.

According to the Western Cape Department of Mobility, the fire – reportedly sparked by an electrical fault – ignited shortly before midnight, sending thick smoke through the tunnel and triggering emergency response protocols.

“The fire ignited just before midnight, sending thick plumes of smoke through the underground passage,” said department spokesperson Muneera Allie.

Swift Response Saves Lives

All passengers aboard the bus were safely evacuated, with one person sustaining minor injuries.

Emergency services transported the injured individual to a nearby hospital, where they are expected to make a full recovery.

Officials praised the Drakenstein Municipality Fire Services and the Tunnel Fire Team for their rapid and coordinated response, which prevented a potentially more devastating outcome.

Tunnel Suffers Significant Damage

While the fire was brought under control, preliminary assessments indicate substantial structural damage to the tunnel, necessitating its continued closure.

Engineering teams are currently conducting thorough safety evaluations to determine the full extent of the damage and the timeline for repairs.

As a result, both the Huguenot Tunnel and Du Toitskloof Pass remain inaccessible to traffic, creating significant disruption on this critical route between Cape Town and the interior.

Alternate Routes for Motorists

Motorists are urged to use the following alternative routes until the tunnel is reopened:

  • Worcester to Cape Town: via Wolseley – Wellington – Paarl – N1
  • Cape Town to Worcester: via Paarl – Wolseley – Worcester
  • The N2 is accessible via Worcester and Villiersdorp
  • Bainskloof Pass is currently open to light motor vehicles only

Authorities have stressed the importance of public cooperation and adherence to diversion routes to ensure road safety and minimise traffic congestion during the closure.

Further updates will be provided as engineers complete assessments and restoration work begins.
