Update on Kaizer Chiefs and Nigerian striker

Kaizer Chiefs followers have been desperate for clarity. Etiosa Ighodaro, who recently played on loan at AmaZulu, had supposedly signed for Amakhosi.

With the Betway Premiership starting in less than a month, the 24-year-old Nigerian has still not been seen in a Kaizer Chiefs tracksuit.

What’s actually happening? Didn’t his deal with Mamelodi Sundowns run its course?

According to the latest report, the towering striker is still a Sundowns player until June 2026. Amakhosi are therefore waiting on Sundowns to make a decision on Ighodaro.

Kaizer Chiefs news: Underfire striker and more signings

“At the moment Kaizer Chiefs are waiting on Sundowns,” an insider told Soccer Laduma. “Ighodaro has one year remaining on his contract with Sundowns and only if they can release him first as a free agent or if they can buy him from the remaining months on his contract.

“But Chiefs are interested in him and depending on what Sundowns’ decision is, then Chiefs would still sign him before the start of the season.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ POSITION

Additional details say Sundowns are unable to register Ighodaro since the Betway Premiership champions already have five foreign players. The Kaizer Chiefs target will only qualify for his Permanent Residence Permit in 2026.

“As soon as he obtains his Permanent Residence Permit, then Sundowns are believed to be willing to keep him because he won’t affect their foreign quota and then it would be difficult for Chiefs to sign him this season.

“But it’s believed that if there is a fee to be paid then Sundowns would consider letting him go whether it’s to Kaizer Chiefs or any other team,” the insider concluded.
