URC: Vincent Tshituka thrives in leading Bok-laden Sharks

After experiencing a shaky start to the season, which saw them record a defeat and draw in the opening two rounds, coach John Plumtree recently embraced the return of his star player by including several Springboks who featured in Rassie Erasmus’ Championship-winning squad in his match-day 23.

Some notable inclusions include wingers Makazole Mapimpi and 22-year-old Ethan Hooker, who impressed in his debut season with the national side. Meanwhile, the experience of Bongi Mbonambi and Vincent Koch provides impact from the Sharks bench.

Thriving in Sharks’ leadership

Despite the team being filled with experienced internationals, the Congolese-born Vincent Tshituka, who made his Springbok debut against Italy in July, maintains his captaincy for the third consecutive match.

In a statement released by the Sharks, the 27-year-old explains that leading from the front is a challenge he enjoys.

“There’s the performance expected of you as a player, but as a captain there’s a level of ownership you take on for the entire team. It’s something that’s really challenged me, but I’m still growing and learning from the senior guys.”

Pressure is a privilege

Despite the responsibility that comes with being the leader, the flanker explains that he does not consider wearing the armband as pressure.

“It’s an opportunity and definitely not a burden, but with the opportunity comes a massive weight. ‘Burden’ is probably the wrong word, but certainly there’s a weight that comes with that responsibility.

He added:

“In every game I get to captain, I try to do my utmost best. I always try to lead by being a good example of what the coaches and players want from each other. It’s honestly a privilege, a great privilege.”

Meanwhile, Plumtree will be looking to turn around his team’s fortunes when they face Leinster. The match will take place at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday.
