WATCH: DA MP Ian Cameron relives horror Cape Town attack

DA MP Ian Cameron has recounted the terrifying attack he and two colleagues endured during a surprise oversight visit at the Philippi SAPS Training Academy.

During an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Cameron described how, after leaving the Philippi SAPS Training Academy, he was driving colleagues back to the airport, including MP Lisa.

“I’ve been working in this area for about five years and never had anything happen,” he said.

Brutal Assault During Oversight Visit

As they drove, Lisa warned, “Something doesn’t feel right.” Moments later, a brick smashed through the vehicle on Cameron’s side, striking his face and breaking his teeth. He added that he would seek dental care later.

“The scars I have are minor compared to my colleague Nicholas, who suffered severe head injuries,” Cameron said.

Acting in self-defence with his firearm, Cameron managed to drive the team to a secure location before calling emergency services.

“If we hadn’t acted, this could have been much worse,” he added.

Uncertainty Over Attackers’ Intent

Initially unsure whether it was a smash-and-grab or an attempted hijacking, Cameron said the attackers appeared opportunistic, targeting vehicles stuck in heavy traffic.

“They pounced as soon as they saw an opportunity,” he said. The MPs’ car keys were not in the ignition, which likely stopped the attackers from causing greater harm.

Praising Police Response

Cameron praised the quick action of Philippi East SAPS and the state ambulance service.

“They didn’t even know we were MPs, but they responded quickly and professionally,” he said.

Oversight Visit Reveals Academy Shortcomings

Despite the attack, the MPs’ visit revealed ongoing challenges at the Philippi Training Academy, including shortages of resources and poor sanitation in dormitories and kitchens.

Cameron said the academy showed some minor improvements since the previous visit, but most of it remains in tatters.

Should authorities increase security for MPs during field visits to prevent such attacks?
