WATCH: Staff forced to cut long nails at work sparks confusion

To clip or quit?

A video circulating on social media has sparked strong reactions after staff at a popular homeware store were filmed clipping their nails while at work.

The footage shows two women assisting each other by trimming their long nails in the store, with one holding out her hand while the other carefully clips them down.

EXTRA-LONG NAILS NOT ALLOWED

In the video, shared by News Nexus SA, a woman believed to be a manager at a Sheet Street store located at Shopping mall in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, can be heard saying that “extra-long” nails would not be tolerated.

“This is where I’m going to start making an example. I will give you a nail clipper, and you will cut it off in front of us to the acceptable length,” she said.

She added that if staff members’ nails were deemed too long, they would be required to cut them down themselves. The company has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. The query has, however, been escalated to the relevant department.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

According to the Labour Guide, courts have recognised that employees’ appearance contributes to a company’s public image. It further states that a reasonable dress or grooming code falls within proper management prerogative.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health stipulates that nurses and medical staff must keep their nails between 1–2mm. Enhancements such as artificial tips and polish are prohibited.

SOCIAL MEDIA USERS REACT

Social media users had mixed views. Na’ilah Petersen noted: “If that was acrylic nails, you’re supposed to soak it off. Acrylic can snap in any direction and could literally split their nail beds in half.”

Ayesha Swtpea argued: “Rules are meant to be followed… Nails or your job, you decide.”

Meanwhile, Damienne Govender added: “Every job has a dress code and code of conduct. Please start reading your contracts before signing.”

DO YOU THINK THE STAFF SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASKED TO CLIP THEIR NAILS WHILE AT WORK?
