The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will carry out zero-pressure tests and conditional assessments on the water supply network in the South Peninsula from 21:00 on Wednesday, 3 September until 04:00 on Thursday, 4 September 2025.
Cape Town residents in Masiphumelele, Sun Valley, Sunnydale, Chapman’s Bay Estate, Noordhoek and along Noordhoek Main Road should prepare for overnight water supply disruptions during that time period.
The tests form part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy, which aims to reduce pipe bursts and leaks by improving pressure control.
Some households may experience low pressure while others could have no water at all during the testing period. The City says it is not possible to predict exactly which properties or streets will be directly affected.
The point of water pressure tests
Zero-pressure and step testing are used to detect unmapped inflows before installing new infrastructure, such as pressure-reducing valves.
The City says the work is essential for long-term water security. The Water and Sanitation Directorate will run further tests to ensure residents continue getting a reliable water supply.
“Pressure fluctuations may be experienced, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact as far as possible,” the City said in a statement.
Other planned water supply disruptions
In addition to the overnight pressure testing, maintenance work is scheduled across several Cape Town areas from 1 September 2025:
Rylands: A pipe replacement project in Mabel and Middel Roads begins on 1 September and runs until 12 December. Residents may face intermittent water flow and some construction noise.
Protea Village, Brackenfell: Water will be shut off on Tuesday, 2 September from 09:00 to 17:00 to allow for valve and fire hydrant installations.
Manenberg, Bishop Lavis, Ravensmead West, Elsies River, Ruyterwacht and Paarden Eiland: Field investigations into water supply zones will continue, with Paarden Eiland set for work on Wednesday, 3 September between 09:00 and 15:00. Brief disruptions may occur.
The City has urged residents in all affected areas to store water in advance, keep taps closed during outages, and expect some temporary discolouration when supply is restored.
