Not for the first time, the public has berated Woolworths for another “overpriced” item – this time it’s imported mangoes.
WOOLWORTHS IMPORTED MANGOES GO VIRAL
On the X app, user @ __Shezi posted a screenshot of a pair of imported mangoes being sold at Woolworths for R159,99.
The out-of-season fruit was available on the shelves of the high-end retailer during the winter months. As a result, it was imported from countries like Brazil, where it is in season.
“Sorry, but two mangoes for essentially two hundred rand is a scam on top of a scam. Like mango was already a scam and then this”, posted the X user.
Others were just as shocked..
@VDubese: “This is insane!
@mhlungu598: “The AUDACITY!”
SEASONAL AND NON-SEASONAL FRUIT
Like many retailers, Woolworths imports non-seasonal fruit and vegetables for its consumers, but at higher prices due to increased costs.
South Africa imports off-season fruit like stone fruit [peaches, plums, nectarines, and mangoes] as well as kiwis, avocados, citrus, bananas, papayas, and strawberries from countries in Europe, Asia, South America, and other African countries.

Likewise, South Africa supplies seasonal fruit to other countries and is considered the largest citrus exporter in the Southern Hemisphere.
South Africa is also a large exporter of apples, pears, grapes, stonefruit, avocados, and blueberries.
In the coming summer months, South Africans can enjoy seasonal tropical fruits like litchis, mangoes, watermelon, pineapples, and guavas.
