World’s deepest pool to be built at UK airport – but you can’t swim in it

THE DEEPEST pool in the world is set to open in the UK – but don’t expect to be able to book any swimming lessons.

The new pool will be part of Cornwall Airport in Newquay’s Aerohub Zone.

It will open near at Cornwall Airport

First announced in 2021, the Blue Abyss will be a £150million facility which will include the world’s biggest and deepest pool.

Instead of being open to the public, it will be used as a testing facility for new underwater technology, such as advanced subsea robotics.

The facility itself has been designed by British architect Robin Partington, behind The Gherkin.

Measuring 40m by 50m, the pool will hold the same amount of water as 17 Olympic sized swimming pools.

(This also works out to 168 million cups of tea).

It will also be 50m deep – to compare, most public swimming pools are around 1.8m in the deep end.

Backed by British astronaut Major Time Peake, it will even be used to train astronauts, with the nearby Spaceport Cornwall.

This will include International Space Station simulation sets.

He said: “This project will join Goonhilly Earth Station and Spaceport Cornwall as significant national assets… helping to widen our knowledge of how humans and technology can function in extreme environments, for the benefit of people and the planet.”

Earlier this year, the project was also backed by NASA.

A Blue Abyss spokesperson said: “Nasa and Blue Abyss will collaborate to explore innovative solutions for training and conducting research that addresses challenges in low Earth orbit, cis-lunar, lunar and Martian environments.”

It could even be used by movie directors who want to have underwater film sets.

An official opening date for the pool is yet to be confirmed although works have started.

Thankfully, while you can’t visit the pool, you can visit the airport as it has regular UK flights.

It you want to find the world’s deepest swimming pool you are allowed to go in, then you will want to head to Dubai.

Deep Dive Dubai is around 200ft deep, and is used by divers wanting to train or even kids wanting lessons.

It also has it’s “world-famous sunken city” that can be explored with a guide underwater.

If you want Europe’s longest swimming pool, you will need to go to France.

Otherwise here is where the world’s biggest wave pool is.
