World’s second-largest home improvement retailer opens first store in KZN

MR. D.I.Y. has made it its KZN debut with a flagship store at Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre in Richards Bay.

The launch marks the retailer’s third South African outlet and a major step in its rapid national rollout.

With more than 5 000 stores worldwide, MR. D.I.Y. is recognised as one of the world’s largest home-improvement retailers by store count – second only to Ace Hardware, and just ahead of Home Depot – and continues to expand across Asia, Europe and now Africa.

Its move into KZN signals growing confidence in the South African market and a long-term commitment to local consumers.

A growing national footprint

MR. D.I.Y. South Africa says the Richards Bay launch is just the beginning for the province. The retailer plans to open several more stores across KZN, not only in major metros but also in smaller towns and rural communities where affordable home-improvement options remain limited.

Nationally, the company expects to have six stores trading by early 2026, with a target of up to 100 stores over the next five years.

The Richards Bay opening has already created around 20 new jobs, including managerial and cashier roles, as part of MR. D.I.Y.’s broader investment into South Africa’s retail sector.
