Zambian driver attempts to escape after causing accident

A Zambian driver who lost control of the truck he was driving and ploughed into about 15 other vehicles on the N3, near Cliffdale, KwaZulu-Natal, on 4 September, attempted to escape the scene.

About 17 people were injured following the collision among multiple vehicles.

Reports by ALS indicate that multiple vehicles were involved in the collision that occurred around 7.30 am.

“A truck fully loaded had somehow lost control and ploughed into multiple vehicles and trucks before coming to rest in the centre median,” ALS Paramedics said.

MEC for transport glad the Zambian driver was apprehended

Concerned by the high accident rates in KwaZulu-Natal since June, Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlement, said he was relieved that nobody had died from this “major” accident that caused much delay for motorists.

“ I commend our highly dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate who apprehended the truck driver who was trying to run away from the accident scene.

“I have mandated the RTI team to work with the South African Police Service to ensure that there is a successful conviction of this truck driver,” said Duma.

The minister said it was important to establish whether the driver had the relevant documents authorising him to drive.

In light of this, and other accidents, Duma said he welcomed the national Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy’s announcement that the adjudication process to select new Train Operating Companies (TOCs) by Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) was complete.

Duma said for KwaZulu-Natal, this meant cargo would now be transported by rail instead of road.

“This means fewer trucks and fewer accidents on our major routes,” added Duma.
